Hillary Lyon - Bio Pic.jpg

Hillary Lyon is editor for Subsynchronous Press, a small press publisher of two high-caliber poetry journals, The Laughing Dog (RIP: 2000-2015) and Veil: Journal of Darker Musings.  She earned a BS in Education from the University of Texas (Austin), where she attended poetry-writing workshops conducted by poets Anthony Sobin and Albert Goldbarth.  She then went on to earn her Masters in English Literature from Southern Methodist University in Dallas. While at SMU she worked with poet Jack Myers (her creative-writing thesis director), and spent an enlightening semester in a poetry workshop conducted by the poet Pattiann Rogers.  After she arrived in Tucson, she became a member of Becky Berkit‘s Poets’ Voice and Range Workshop (sponsored by the University of Arizona Poetry Center) and poet Will Inman‘s workshop. From 2005 through 2010 she hosted/moderated Poetry @ the River (aka River Poets) in Tucson. She has had her own poems appear in a slew of  publications, ranging from academic journals to online ‘zines.

Among her other poetic endeavors, she was the judge for the short poems category of the Arizona State Poetry Society Spring Contest in 2005, 2007, and 2011. She also acted as one of the judges for the Bay Area Poets Contest in 2010. Hillary has performed as a featured reader for the Tucson Poetry Crawl (2002), the Divergent Arts Series (Phoenix), the Lamplight Reading Series (Tucson), the Other Voices Women’s Reading Series (Tucson), and the Make-a-Date With a Poet Series (Tucson). In 2003, she read her poetry on Tucson’s KXCI’s (93.1 FM) “A Poet’s Moment.” Hillary was recently one of the poets featured in the Pima County Main Library’s Poet Showcase. She is currently serving as Secretary for the Tucson Poetry Society.

Over the past decade, her horror/sci-fi/speculative fiction short stories have appeared in more than 50  publications online and in print, as well as in more than 25 anthologies.

Hillary is also an illustrator for a pulp fiction website (Yellow Mama), a scifi/horror website (Black Petals), and for print horror magazines. When not writing or illustrating, she hand paints (and sells) furniture and boxes in the dia de los muertes style.

She has lived in France, Brazil, Canada, and several states in the U.S. She appeared, briefly, as the uncredited “all-American Mom with baby” in Timothy Gassen’s Arizona indie-film, “Vote for Zombie.”

For further information, she is listed with the Internet Speculative Fiction Database (ISFDB), and with the Poets & Writers Directory.
